Inequality Number Line Calculator

Enter a one-variable linear inequality to see its boundary point and solution direction. Strict inequalities use open endpoints; inclusive inequalities use closed endpoints.

Solution: x > 1. The endpoint is dashed. The shaded direction is right.

Open and closed endpoints

For x > 2, the point 2 is excluded, so the endpoint is open. For x ≥ 2, the point 2 is included, so the endpoint is closed.

Reading the shaded interval

Shading to the left represents values smaller than the boundary. Shading to the right represents values greater than the boundary. The endpoint determines whether equality is included.

Supported input

Enter one linear inequality, such as 2x + 3 <= 11 or -3x > 6. The calculator reverses the inequality direction when a negative coefficient is used to isolate x. It does not currently support compound inequalities, absolute values, or systems.

For two-variable inequalities, use the graphing calculator .
