Graphing Inequalities Calculator

Solve a linear inequality, visualize its solution, and understand the working with step-by-step explanations.

Supported: linear inequalities in x and y, or one-variable linear inequalities. Use <= or >= for inclusive boundaries.

Graph

y > 2x + 1
-7-6-5-4-3-2-11234567-7-6-5-4-3-2-11234567xy
Solution: y > 2x + 1Boundary: dashed

How to graph an inequality

  1. Enter a linear inequality, such as y > 2x + 1.
  2. Rewrite the inequality to identify its boundary line.
  3. Use a dashed boundary for strict inequalities and a solid boundary for inclusive inequalities.
  4. Shade above or below the line according to the inequality sign after isolating y.

Understanding boundary lines

A strict inequality, such as y > x + 1, does not include points on its boundary. An inclusive inequality, such as y ≤ x + 1, includes points on the boundary.

This calculator supports linear expressions in x and y, and one-variable linear inequalities. It does not currently solve compound inequalities or absolute-value inequalities.

Common input questions

Why is the boundary dashed or solid?

Use a dashed line for < or > because the boundary is excluded. Use a solid line for ≤ or ≥ because the boundary is included.

Can I graph a one-variable inequality?

Yes. Enter an inequality such as 2x + 3 <= 11, then use the number-line calculator to focus on its endpoint and interval direction.
